College Insight with Marcus Murphy

Marcus Murphy played Club Soccer at CCSC from the age of 6 and like many young players, he always aspired to play Collegiate and Professional Soccer. Marcus committed to the University of South Florida and graduated from Fleming Island High School 6 months early to fulfill his dream on the Collegiate stage.

The University of South Florida is widely regarded as one of the best soccer programs in the Nation. The Bulls currently compete in the American Athletic Conference and are coached by Bob Butehorn.

Having just completed his Spring season, playing and starting against Major League Soccer and Professional teams that include New York Red Bull’s, Chicago Fire, Philadelphia Union and the Tampa Bay Rowdies, we recently touched base with Marcus, asking him several questions, to get an insight on his experience.

What made you pick The University of South Florida?
"I looked at a lot of schools and had a lot of strong offers, however, ultimately USF always stood out to me. I wanted to be at a big program that invests a lot of resources into its soccer program. USF has a very strong track record and I was excited to make a name for myself in a bigger and tougher crowd. "

How was the transition from club to college?
"It is a big jump, but it is manageable. The consistency of quality and demand in training is hard work, the coaches expect perfection. It is like playing in a tough game every day. The school work is also challenging, you are constantly busy - there is no down time! "

How did CCSC prepare you for college?
"I have always admired the professionalism of CCSC coaches. They are very organized, our trips, our training sessions, our preparation and the attention to detail. The training sessions are very intense and always pushed me. I was always recruited by professional clubs and academies, but the level of training, guidance for college and professionalism I received at CCSC provided everything I need."

What is your advice for young players?
"Stay competitive, stay hungry and don’t let the fire go out! Never be content finishing second. Trust the club and staff. "

What was it like playing against professionals this season?
"The speed of play is unbelievable. It is not just what they do on the ball, but off the ball also -they were always a step ahead. They had so much experience and were always thinking. Obviously their size, strength and speed was unreal. I loved every minute."
