Lia Godfrey Stands Out at U17 US National Camp

Clay County's own Lia Godfrey is on her way back from her first camp with the US U17 National Team. At age 14 Godfrey is the youngest player to be called into a U17 World Cup Team camp since Clay County Sol's Morgan Brian did it in 2008. The camp which was held in Raleigh, North Carolina from July 7-13 was an opportunity for coach BJ Snow and his staff to look at some new talent as he begins to finalize his roster for the upcoming U17 World Cup this September in Jordan.

Once again Godfrey made the best of the opportunity and was one of the most dynamic and effective players at the camp.

From Top Drawer Soccer; "Lia Godfrey: Arguably one of the craftiest players of the afternoon. Godfrey was lethal with her combination play and made all the correct runs to open space when here teammates had the ball. She had a soft but decisive touch with the ball at her feet, which was displayed when she evaded the RailHawks goalkeeper to score on an empty net."

" I talked to Lia right after she received the invitation and it reminded me of the conversation I'd had with Morgan back in 2008. They were both 14 and a bit apprehensive and scared about being called in three years early so I told them that they had nothing to lose and that the pressure would always be on the player marking them, so do your best and go have fun" Said CCSC Director Luis Torres, (Godfrey's current trainer and coach and Morgan Brian's coach in 2008).

'"Lia is on a very similar path as Morgan" said Torres. It's kinda weird to have 2 amazing players on similar trajectories that are almost 9 years apart. I find myself saying the same things to Lia that I told Morgan back then. They are both great talents but very different players. I do think that Lia has the advantage of having Morgan as someone she can turn to for advice and guidance.

I'm proud and blessed to be a part of both of their growth and development and I also take it as validation that our environment and coaching philosophy at CCSC has worked and still works to help develop high level players".

Godfrey went on to play all 90 minutes in the 1st scrimmage of the last day of camp vs. a compilation of college players from the Raleigh Durham area. She played left forward in the first half and attacking midfielder in the second half where she had 4 assists.

Terrific Job Lia, we're all incredibly proud of you here at CCSC!
