Lia Godfrey to represent USA in Italy
Clay County’s Lia Godfrey has been called in to the U.S. U-16 National Team for the Six Nation Gradisca Tournament in Northern Italy. Lia will travel with the U.S. team to Gradisca d’Isonzo, Italy from April 19th - 29th to compete in their first international tournament of 2016. They will play against U-17 teams from Italy and Iran in group play and will meet either Mexico, France or England in the final leg.
Godfrey, who has been active with the U-15 National team since last year, is one of the youngest players to be called in to the U-16 team for the tournament.
"We here at Clay County Soccer are really excited and very proud of Lia for having earned this honor and opportunity to represent the USA in Italy" said Godfrey's coach Luis Torres. "She has worked extremely hard to get to this point and is now considered one of the best young players in the U.S., it is a testament to her relentless work ethic and her always humble attitude."
The trip also has special meaning for Lia as her maternal Grandmother is from Italy and also has family there. "I'm excited for the trip, I think I'll be a little nervous when I put on the USA uniform but I'll also be proud and honored to play for my country. I think that playing against older players from those countries will be a great challenge and will make the speed of play much faster" said Godfrey.
Lia's goal is to make the 2018 U-17 World Cup team and this experience should help her get one-step closer to that accomplishment.
